A fixture in the world of horse racing who has been writing, talking about and betting on races for years, Deming has been on the cutting edge with his horse racing bets. He hit exactly at the Wood Memorial in April. Last year, he made it to the minute hit, trifecta and superfecta at the Belmont Stakes. This is the same rider who has won the Derby Oaks double at Churchill Downs nine times in the last 13 years. That means he’s been holding a ticket with the winners of both the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby all but four times in his last 13 attempts.
Plus, at some point in 2020, he picked the winners of six consecutive races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby, and Belmont Stakes. On Friday, he pinned the accuracy to the 2022 Kentucky Oaks Championship. Everyone who followed him in these races is the way.
Now, with the Kentucky Derby 2022 squad closed, Dimming shares his picks and predictions for SportsLine. Go here to see them.
Best predictions for the 2022 Kentucky Derby
One of his surprise Kentucky Derby picks in 2022: He’s fading out the Epicenter, saying one of the top favorites barely makes it into the top three. Epicenter is one of the only 2022 Kentucky Derby horses to earn both Beyer and Brisnet speed numbers of 100 or more. However, a second place finish at the Epicenter at Lecomte Stakes in January gives the expert some downtime.
“I was really hoping he was the hot favorite so I could get a better price out of my two best,” Dimming told SportsLine. “The only Epicenter race he didn’t finish first or second was at Churchill Downs in his first match. He won the lead and the chase and he has really good speed numbers. I can see him picking up the roses, but I’m going somewhere else.”
Another surprise: Deming is high on Mo Donegal, even though he’s a double-digit long shot and will be racing from the inside post. Mo Donegal will be out of number one on Saturday. Ferdinand, the 1986 champion, was the last horse to win the Kentucky Derby from that spot.
Despite drawing the inside post, Deming still believes Mo Donegal will have a legitimate chance of winning at Churchill Downs. “Usually a first in a position is a bad draw, but he’ll go down and do a run,” Dimming told SportsLine. Three-year-old Colt showed impressive acceleration and determination in winning the Remsen Stakes in December, defeating favorite Zandon of the 2022 Kentucky Derby in the process.
