Charles Michael was censored by the Chinese authorities

During the opening ceremony of the China International Import Expo (CIIE), a pre-recorded video message was broadcast to the public along with speeches by other world leaders.

In this speech, Charles Michael criticizes Russia’s “illegal war” in Ukraine, from which Europe can learn “important lessons”. He also reportedly asked China to put more pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine. “China has a role to play in using its influence to stop Russia’s brutal war. China, you can help end this situation.”, we can read in the text published by the Reuters press agency? Charles Michael urged China to become less economically dependent on China.

However, Chinese authorities decided not to broadcast the speech, which was considered too critical. The information surprised the diplomats. Speeches scrutinized include those of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the heads of the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization, and the presidents of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Belarus.

“President Michael was invited to address the ceremony”Charles Michael’s spokesman, Barent Letts, confirmed. “As requested by the Chinese authorities, we provided a pre-recorded message, which was ultimately not broadcast. We discussed it through normal diplomatic channels.”

China’s foreign and trade ministries, expo organizers and the Shanghai city government could not be reached for comment, Reuters reported.
