Greg Berhalter: Gio Reina’s mother says she reported allegations against the men’s national team coach

CNN

United States men’s national team (USMNT) Soccer player Gio Reina’s mother, Danielle, said Wednesday that she was the one who reported the 1991 incident between the U.S. men’s soccer coach. Greg Berhalter and his wife, Rosalind.

Rinna says she told USSF Athletic Director Ernie Stewart about the incident, which occurred on Dec. 11, during Qatar World Cup 2022.

In a statement obtained by ESPN and Fox Sports, Renna stated, “I told Ernie that I thought it was particularly unfair that Gio, who apologized for acting inappropriately about his playing time, was still being dragged through the mud when Greg asked for it. He received forgiveness for doing so.” Something much worse at the same age.”

Rena was referring to her son Geo’s recent quarrel with Berhalter.

Gio Reina, one of the most accomplished young players in the U.S. Soccer Federation’s squad with nearly 100 appearances under his belt for the 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund, has played an unexpectedly limited role in Qatar without starts and made just two appearances as a substitute.

Berhalter was disappointed in Reina’s pre-tournament efforts and considered sending him home in the middle of the tournament, according to multiple reports.

On Tuesday, the USMNT announced that it had hired a legal team to investigate Berhalter for an allegation of inappropriate behavior.

Berhalter issued a statement on his Twitter account on Tuesday, which was signed by the technical director and his wife, Rosalind. Berhalter described the violent moment in 1991 that Danielle Reyna said informed American football.

Berhalter said he kicked his then-girlfriend, now his wife. He described it as a “shameful moment” that he “regrets to this day”.

The soccer coach, who led the US team in Qatar, said someone called the American soccer game during the Qatar 2022 World Cup and threatened to “take me down”. Berhalter did not mention Daniel Reina in the joint statement.

People can make mistakes and learn from them; “People can also be forgiven for their mistakes,” Berhalter wrote in the joint statement. “Thank God, Rosalind has forgiven me.

“The intent of this statement is to provide transparency and assurance that one bad decision a teen made does not necessarily define them for the rest of their lives. We are not going to hide from this. We haven’t, and we won’t now.”

Gio Reina received little playing time in Qatar.

Berhalter said he and his wife cooperated with the ongoing investigation into the allegations.

“We embrace this opportunity to share what has shaped us and how much we’ve grown and learned from this over the past 31 years,” the statement concluded.

US Soccer says it launched a “full review” of the men’s program last month.

On Wednesday, Stewart announced that Anthony Hudson will serve as interim coach for the men’s national team while the organization reviews its program.

Berhalter’s future with American football remains uncertain. He was appointed to the position in December 2018.

“In the past, the usual review of the entire program after the World Cup for the past four years would begin in the summer, long before any contract expired at the end of the year,” the NFL said on Wednesday.

“The unique November-December timing of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has significantly reduced the amount of time the association will have to make a proper assessment before the head coach’s contract expires.”
