“I mean no harm”

Ayan Niku Onat, a year ago, was a truck driver. But last July, the man was found guilty of a heinous act that claimed the lives of three people. Ayan, a married father of one daughter, caused a horrific accident on the A1 in County Durham, United Kingdom, after using his phone while driving. And on a busy highway, the traffic was slow and it had dire consequences.

His truck hit several cars before bursting into flames. Witnesses also described the crash as resembling a “bomb explosion”. Paul Mullen, Elaine Sullivan and David Daglish tragically lost their lives in the play. So when the truth came out, the families were even more shocked: Ian was surfing “adult dating sites”.

During the trial, the man apologized for the terror he had caused. “When I saw the videos, I… I don’t know, I can’t explain it. It was very unnerving to know that I was the only one going through the cars. I mean no harm, it’s just another day at my job. I didn’t want it to be like this and I’m very sorry,” he explained in statements reported by several British media outlets.

“I have to understand that my life will never be the same again, I have to pay for my mistakes, far from the real world, far from my friends and my family. I never had the chance to ask for forgiveness, to apologize to those who lost loved ones,” he added.
