Reading Time: 2 minutes

UA plane crashed into Tanzania’s Lake Victoria on Sunday due to bad weather shortly before landing in the northwestern city of Bukoba, police said, with rescue operations underway.

Regional Police Commander William Mwambakele told reporters at Bukoba Airport, “A (airline) Precision Air plane has crashed.

No information was immediately available on the number of passengers on board, but local media reported that 49 people were on the flight from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s economic capital, to the lakeside city of Bukoba.

“The situation is under control as security teams are working hard to rescue the passengers,” added Commander Mwambagele.

Tanzania’s largest private airline, Precision Air, issued a brief statement confirming the crash. A rescue team has been sent to the scene and more information will be released in two hours, the airline said.

The crash comes five years after a Safari plane crashed in northern Tanzania, killing 11 people.
