PS5 VRR support is finally coming this week, boosting performance in some games

Variable refresh rate – VRR for short – has been a much requested feature for many PlayStation 5 users since the console’s launch. The good news is that it’s finally happening; Sony has announced that support for VRR will arrive via a PS5 update this week. A few games will be specifically updated to take advantage of the feature, although you’ll be able to toggle an option to apply it to “unsupported” games as well.

With that in mind, Sony says the following games will be updated “in the coming weeks”:

Not the biggest choice, right? But it must be emphasized that you can still enable VRR for everyone From your games through PS5 system settings – only patches for listed games will allow for the “Best VRR Experience”.

If you encounter any issues with an unsupported game, you can simply disable it in your console settings, as shown below:

If you’re sitting there wondering what a VRR actually is, here’s a brief explanation from the official PlayStation Blog: “VRR dynamically synchronizes the screen’s refresh rate with the PS5 console’s graphic output. This enhances the visual performance of PS5 games by reducing or eliminating visual scenes, such as frame speed issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as the scenes are Display is smooth, graphics look sharper, and input lag is reduced.”

Essentially, VRR can make your games run better – but you’ll need to make sure you have an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TV or monitor for it to work.
