Tesla is being investigated because the steering wheels are off the Model Y.

New York (CNN) Federal safety regulators are investigating Tesla’s Model Y SUV after at least two instances in which owners said their steering wheels separated while the vehicle was being driven.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into 2023. It said that in the two cases in which the steering wheel blew off, the cars were delivered to buyers without the retaining bolt that connects the steering wheel to the steering column.

The agency’s report did not mention whether there were accidents or injuries as a result of the problem.

NHTSA said about 120,000 vehicles on US roads could be affected by the problem. This is an investigation, a step the agency takes before a motion of no confidence.

Tesla isn’t the only company facing safety questions about the steering wheel. Nissan also revealed to NHTSA that it is recalling about 1,100 Nissan Ariyas, its electric SUV, because it may be missing a required bolt on the steering wheel.

Three vehicles were found in the dealerships’ inventories as there was a lot of play in the steering wheels, and upon inspection it was discovered that bolts were missing on each. But in none of these cases did the steering wheel come off while the cars were being driven, and there were no reports of accidents or injuries caused by the missing bolts.

In February, Tesla was required to issue a recall of approximately 363,000 vehicles equipped with what it calls “Full self-drivingprograms after NHTSA determined that they “conducted an unreasonable risk to vehicle safety on the basis of inadequate adherence to traffic safety laws.” ”

Among the traffic rules, vehicles that were violated in FSD mode were to “travel straight through an intersection while in a turning lane only, enter a stop-sign controlled intersection without stopping completely, or proceed through an intersection while at a steady yellow traffic light without Be careful “.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk objected to calling it a “recall,” saying it only required an over-the-air software update that didn’t require the owner to bring the cars to service centers for repair.

But Tesla did call request Last month of 3,470 2022-2023 Model Y vehicles were affected by the bolts in the rear tires of the second-row seats not being properly installed, which could cause the seat belts in those seats to not function properly in the event of an accident.

Tesla has not had public relations personnel in several years and email inquiries to its press office are no longer accepted.
